It has just been announced that the start of principle photography is due to begin today on the Downton Abbey movie!

Gareth Neame, the film’s producer said, “We are excited that photography is about to start on the long awaited film”. He also was pleased that, “the beloved main characters will be joined by such exceptional actors playing new roles unique to the movie.”

The original principal cast from the television series have already been confirmed as reprising there roles. Joining them will be Academy-Award® nominee and multi-award winning actress Imelda Staunton. Her roles in Vera Drake, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Pride stand out. As you can see we have pictured her from the BBC series Psychoville.

Other cast starring alongside are Geraldine James (Made in Dagenham), Simon Jones (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) and David Haig (Penny Dreadful). Plus we have Tuppence Middleton (War and Peace), Kate Phillips (The Crown) and Stephen Campbell Moore (History Boys), amongst others.

Downton Abbey movie’s production personnel

Academy-Award® winner Julian Fellowes who created Downton Abbey and wrote the film’s screenplay will also produce. He will do this alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. Brian Percival, who directed the series’ pilot, will now executive produce the movie. Michael Engler is returning to direct. We also have Nigel Marchant returning to executive produce.

Downton Abbey television series

As I suspect you all know the Downton Abbey television series followed the lives of the Crawley family. An Edwardian English country home during the turn of the 20th century provided the setting.

There was 6 seasons in total where it garnered many awards.

  • 3 Golden Globe Awards
  • 15 Primetime Emmy Awards
  • And a Special BAFTA award.

The 69 Emmy nominations made it the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys! It also earned a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show along the way!

Downton Abbey movie’s release date?

The Downton Abbey movie is a Carnival Films production. Distributing the film are Focus Features and Universal Pictures International.

We are expecting a late 2019 release although there is no official word confirming this.
